A View on Multinationals and Plant Exit: Caveat to be considered for Cambodia
April 14, 2008 · 4 Comments
Today, I came across an interesting paper from one Journal, on the topic of multinationals and plant exit (Alverez and Gorg (2008), “Multinationals and Plant Exit”, International Review of Economics and Finance) . This topic remind me of the previous tour I went to Cambodia. During my home visit, I noticed lot of new building and investment projects have started including The new golden tower, the camko city and many constructions.
However, investment project is not always achieved. Some has to be delayed for longer period of time before it start. Some have to give up before the planned priod indicated in Investment Application to CDC. One of the observation is an investment of NAGA Plaza near Rivers side (owned by Malaysian companies) is just completed by this year too late than the planned period. Imagine if an investor promised to carry out a project then he give up the investment in the middle of process what will be the consequence. Another obvious is a tall building near Depos Market next to Olympic stadium which before planned to be a hotel but then delayed for several years, left unused and now is used as a betting place for Cambo Six. Will the golden tower complete? Just a kidding question.
This remainds me of the Law of Bankcrupcy that Bang Sovath has raised several times in Khmer Seminar at Nagoya University. Preparation for that kind of event such as subsidization or punishement should be one of critical subject to discuss. Why do such problem important? Lay off and unemployment is a bad consequece. How long the multinational will survive? Will the it cause the domestic firm to exit? How to embbed a linkage between domestic firms and multinational? These are problem to think a head in the case of developping countries like Cambodia as the inflow of FDI is increasing.
Another aspect is about the entry mode of FDI in the form of aquisition, from which foreing owner take control of existing firm versus the entry in the form of green fiend investment (a new firm) is also of one important consideration. The problem lies in the creation of new jobs or retaining of existing job as well as the efficiency of technology transfer through greenfield investment or Merger and Aquisition.

I came across this song on youtube. Her voice is so sweet. Well, the word “Nadasoso” riginated from Okinawa, first sang by Moriyama Ryoko. The meaning of the song is about a lady wish to meet the one she always has in her mind. This song is for the one i always think about.I know she love this song. I will always with her to give her support to the endless time where i dont know. Regardless, the ending and so long as I can give her all I can.

The song title “Tsubomi” refere to the bud of flower. it is one of pop song in 2007. The second song is “Hana no na” (name of flower). I heard this song for the first time when I watched a japanese movie on TV with the title “Always”(http://www.youtube.com/v/wsGXDHgWL3Q&hl=en). The movie was quite popular a few months ago. I like this song and I hope only a person whom i always care about could deeply understand it. I wish to see her smile, strong, happy and always.
